Attorney General Sessions has reportedly been applying pressure to both Democratic and Republican lawmakers recently, in an apparent effort to rally support for his plan to reduce and eliminate current federal protections for medical marijuana businesses and consumers – that ARE abiding by state law.

Senators Al Franken and Rand Paul have formed an unlikely duo – to fight this insanity and to support important new marijuana reform legislation.

Legislation that would:

  • reschedule marijuana within the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) from I to II,
  • remove cannabidiol (CBD) from the CSA entirely,
  • amend the CSA to exclude state sanctioned medical marijuana from CSA-related control and enforcement (this is a really big one), plus…

Prohibit federal banking regulators from:

  • disallowing legitimate marijuana related business from deposit insurance,
  • or otherwise penalizing, prohibiting, or even discouraging a regulating depository institution from providing financial services to state-law abiding marijuana related businesses!

Joining Senators Paul and Franken to support this important marijuana reform bill are Republican Senators Mike lee and Lisa Murkowski and Democratic Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Cory Booker.

This upcoming legislation is expected by many to be a comprehensive marijuana reform package. The legislation, which already enjoys broad bipartisan support, is based on S.683 – Compassionate Access, Research Expansion, and Respect States Act of 2015.

Tom Angell, the chairmen of Marijuana Majority, was recently quoted by the dailycaller.com as saying

“A majority of states now have comprehensive medical marijuana laws on the books, and a supermajority of Americans support letting patients access cannabis without fear of arrest… It’s well past time for Congress to modernize federal law so that people with cancer, multiple sclerosis and PTSD don’t have to worry about Jeff Sessions sending in the DEA to arrest them or their suppliers. The diverse group of lawmakers behind this new legislation shows that medical cannabis is an issue of compassion, not partisan politics.“

This legislation is very similar to another marijuana reform bill cosponsored by Senators Chuck Grassley and Dianne Feinstein – called the Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act.

Without this legislation, AG Sessions could get his way in scaling back protections for legal marijuana businesses, patients, and consumers. Sessions wants legislators to lift restrictions on the Department of Justice which currently prevents prosecution of medical marijuana in states where it is legalized.

Some states are taking matters into their own hands. California is currently on the path to becoming the nation’s first Marijuana Sanctuary State.
